About the tutors

Rachel Demuth

The courses are run by Rachel Demuth who has been a professional vegetarian chef since the early 80s. She was a founder member of Neals' Yard Bakery in Covent Garden, London and in 1984 opened Broad Street Bakery in Bath pioneering organic, vegetarian and vegan cooking.

In 1987 she started Demuths restaurant, which is now one of the most successful vegetarian restaurants in Britain, specializing in unpretentious, creative and healthy food.
She has written three vegetarian cookery books as well as traveled extensively, teaching vegetarian cooking, sharing ideas, picking up tips, gathering recipes and cooking techniques around the world.
In 2001 she started the Vegetarian Cookery School to teach people how to cook the ‘Demuths’ style of delicious, uncomplicated and easy to make vegetarian food.

Rachel was awarded Bath Businesswoman of the year 2010.

Helen Lawrence

Helen has come from being Head Chef at Demuths, a post she filled for 5 years, in which time Demuths won Best Restaurant in Bath award 2007 and Vegan Restaurant of the Year 2009. She is a trained chef and has trained in classical French cooking, with a passion for French patisserie, also an expert in knife skills and chefs tips.
She enjoys the creativity of vegetarian and vegan cooking, lifting vegetables to the central position, they deserve in our diets.

Jo Ingleby

Jo Ingleby is a chef, artist and teacher who has worked with the Vegetarian Cookery School since 2002, and was Head Chef of Demuths Restaurant for three years. Jo spent several years living and working in Spain and her main passion is for the food and culinary traditions of the Mediterranean. Jo specialises in teaching knife skills, cooking techniques and encouraging creativity in the kitchen. 

Jan Berridge

Jan has taught at the Cookery School since the beginning. She is first and foremost an artist and a very accomplished food stylist. She has created many of the recipes taught at the cookery school and her specialties are desserts, perfect pastry and presentation.

Helen looks after all the administration and will answer your phone and email queries.
