Young Vegetarian Chef Competition 2011

The Vegetarian Cookery School in Bath is launching its first national competition to find the Young Vegetarian Chef of the Year 2011 sponsored by Neff. This exciting new contest is open to enthusiastic and creative young chefs aged 11 – 13 and 14 – 16.

To enter the competition, young chefs will be asked to cook their favourite vegetarian main course dish at home and send in a photograph with the recipe, along with a brief explanation about why they love to make their chosen dish. Entries will be judged on knowledge of ingredients, preparation skills, creativity and presentation. Chefs can use any ingredients they like in their recipes, except meat and fish.

Shortlisted young chefs will then be asked to attend the final round of the competition on Tuesday 25 October 2011 and will spend the day cooking a vegetarian main course of their choice within a set time frame, at the Vegetarian Cookery School in Bath. They will also be asked to complete a quiz to test their knowledge of ingredients.

Judging the competition will be Rachel Demuth and two guest judges, Celia Brooks Brown, a leading vegetarian author and TV chef, and award-winning baker Tom Herbert of the Cotswolds-based Hobbs House Bakery. Celia has written seven cookbooks, including the international bestseller New Vegetarian, which sold over 100,000 copies.  Tom Herbert is best known for his BBC TV series In Search of the Perfect Loaf.

The winners in both age categories will win a set of Designer Saucepans courtesy of built in appliance brandleader Neff, a Complete Baking Kit from Hobbs House Bakery, a one-day cookery course at The Vegetarian Cookery School, a Rangemaster Gadget Pot, a Rangemaster Mercara Stripe apron and oven glove and a £20 Kitchens voucher and a signed Green Seasons cookbook by Rachel Demuth. There will also be runner up prizes and all finalists will receive a signed copy of the Green Seasons Cookbook.

To enter, young chefs must send by post or email the application form (downloadable), a jpeg photograph of their dish, with their original recipe and a 100-word explanation of why they love their chosen dish, by THURSDAY 1 SEPTEMBER 2011.
