Gujerati Thali

Come and join Urvashi for a wonderful, spicy day of authentic Gujerati cooking.

She is an experienced home cook and baker who appeared on series 2 of the Great British Bake Off.  Urvashi is also an enthusiastic food writer with articles published on various food websites.  She blogs at www.thebotanicalbaker.wordpress.com.

Urvashi's food and cooking style is influenced by her Gujerati and East African ancestry as well as extensive travels around Japan and South East Asia where she lived for a number of years.

Gujerati food is primarily vegetarian, despite having an extensive coastline for seafood, and this is mainly due to the influence of Hinduism.  It varies widely in flavour and heat, depending on a given family's tastes as well as the region of Gujerat they are from. The four major regions bring their own style to the food but meals often have sweet, salty, and spicy elements at the same time.  We will cook a typical thali from Urvashi’s family town of Rajkot that incorporates all of these elements.

For the Gujerati Thali we will cook Kachoree, Coriander, Coconut and Green Chilli Chutney,Carrot Sambharo,Gujerati Style Potato Shak (curry)Moong Bean Dhal,Rotli (Chappattis)and finish with Shrikhand.

The day will be a mixture of demonstration and hands on.

We will cook and eat as we go along and finish with a large Gujerati Thali with organic wine.
